This controversial ad is from air New Zealand, to advertise their grabaseat deals. The ad had to be banned from the air due to people’s complaints about the use of the term cougar. Rape Prevention Education director Kim McGregor told the NZ Herald the ad was objectionable on several levels and that some Air New Zealand staff were concerned about the promotion.
Air New Zealand shrugged off Tuesday claims that a controversial TV commercial offering rugby tickets to ‘cougars’ – women aged 35 and over who prey on young men in bars – glorified rape.
The commercial was based on reports that ‘cougar’ was a popular term for sexually aggressive older women who sought out men at least 10 years younger in singles bars.
It depicted a cougar starving herself during the day and ‘hunting large slabs of meat at night’ by stalking young men in a bar.
The commercial invited women aged 35 or more to send photographs of themselves out on the town in a competition for free tickets to a seven-a-side rugby tournament in Wellington next month.
A company spokesman said the competition, which closed Monday night, had produced an overwhelming number of entries and positive feedback on ’such a good bit of light-hearted humour.’
New Zealand’s Rape Prevention Education organisation, however, dubbed it ‘appalling, disgusting and degrading to women,’ and asked why the national airline was promoting sexually predatory behaviour.
‘We have also had complaints from male survivors who have been raped by women and they are very distressed that their situation is being laughed at and made out to be humorous,’ director Kim McGregor told Tuesday’s New Zealand Herald.
